EcoLeaf
nachhaltige Druckveredelung

03. April 2022

The new ecoLeaf technology has the potential to revolutionise print finishing. It is intended to generate significantly less material waste and thereby reduce waste substantially. A milestone for resource conservation and sustainability! We are the first printer worldwide in the wine and spirits segment to have used ecoLeaf as a test user since 2020.

Sustainable – protecting the environment

Print finishing with stamping foil is today the most common method for metallic finishing, because the light reflections it creates stand out on the shelf and have been shown to increase products’ sales prospects. Stamping foils are large plastic rolls from which metallic shapes are transferred onto the material with pressure and heat; like biscuits cut from dough. Except that the remaining “dough” can no longer be used. ecoLeaf technology, by contrast, transfers the metal pigments onto the label with precision. No particle of metal is wasted; everything is used. In addition, elaborate stamping dies no longer have to be made for ecoLeaf.

“At the ecoLeaf exhibition stand, a 2.50-metre-high mountain of stamping foil was piled up. Next to it, a small glass of metal pigments. That is how little pigment EcoLeaf is said to need for the same work and performance. I was impressed!„

ecoLEAF – Less material, waste, cost and time

Revolutionary – a technology from Israel

Benny Landa, an Israeli entrepreneur, is regarded as the “Steve Jobs” of the printing industry. He invented the technology on which ecoLeaf is based (which at the time still had a different name) and presented it in 2016 at “drupa”. It is the leading trade fair for the printing industry and takes place every four years in Düsseldorf. Vollherbst plant manager Michael Vetter became aware of ecoLeaf at the time, recognised its value and, together with Matthias Vollherbst, followed its development closely. At the very beginning, the quality of ecoLeaf did not yet meet their standards. “But if everything goes as hoped, ecoLeaf means less material, waste, cost and time for the print shop. We now want to try this innovation ourselves in Endingen,” says Matthias Vollherbst.

Versatile – offering customers more colours

ecoLeaf also offers new possibilities in metallic colours. Particularly in the wine and gourmet sector, gold and silver tones are very popular, especially for lettering, coats of arms or ornament. Gold is not simply gold; there are warm and cooler tones, just as at the jeweller’s. A wide variety of gold tones, as well as other unusual colours, can now be offered with ecoLeaf – without restrictions such as minimum quantities. Matthias Vollherbst: “We are deliberately positioning ourselves with ecoLeaf in the premium segment and are curious to see which new horizons can be conquered with it. ecoLeaf is still in the test phase with us. The first customer projects are due to start from 2021.”
